EMMA SALMON (Bsc (Hons)
Phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine) MCPP
Emma Salmon was trained at the internationally acclaimed College of Phytotherapy in East Sussex, the first - and for many years the only - establishment set up by leading figure Hein Zeylstra to offer an education in Herbal Medicine. 'Our aim is to bring together a team of professional herbalists who recognise the huge recent scientific endorsement of our medicine, to become the Phytotherapists of the 21st Century', said Zeylstra.
Concern for a solid and credible scientific basis in medical herbalism and for professional standards in practice led Hein Zeylstra to establish a professional body, appropriately moderated. Today, it continues to set the standard worldwide as the body for ensuring the highest quality research, education and practice, the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy (CPP) continually monitors its members as to their fitness to practice.
Says Emma Salmon: 'I found my vocation in Herbal Medicine after having my first child and wanting to pursue a profession that was more worthwhile and personally fulfilling than my previous career in the media. Having always been drawn towards complementary therapies, and having studied in several different areas, I felt that Phytotherapy - with its mix of science and natural craft - was my calling.
In my practice I try to understand the cause of a patient's medical issue, working to heal at a deeper level than merely addressing the symptoms. A full medical history is taken (possibly followed by a diagnostic examination, blood pressure/pulse etc.) before a prescription is offered along with any lifestyle or dietary advice.
I have a particular interest in working with children and a personal interest in respiratory complaints; however I am happy to consult on any issue. I have found that the balancing nature of herbal medicine is an effective treatment for many gynaecological problems: PMS, endometriosis, fibroids, heavy or irregular periods, menopausal symptoms and fertility problems in both men and women. Herbs have traditionally helped to support and prepare the body during pregnancy, birth and post-natally, as well as with any lactation problems.
Recently, my research into the use of herbal medicine in relation to cystic fibrosis was recognised as being worthy of an award by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and I have given lectures on child health and
herbal medicine.'
