ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Alexander Technique has become one of the most respected and well-established body-orientatedtherapies. It is a simple-to-learn method that works to change movement habits in our everyday activities – a practical way for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and co-ordination.
Think of the way young children have natural poise. Through bad postural habits – for instance, slouching over a computer or hunching because of stress and anxiety – we lose that; the way joints and muscles work can become distorted. An excess of bodily tension and/or poor alignment can give rise to common conditions such as arthritis, neck and back pain, Repetitive Strain Injury/carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, hypertension (high blood pressure), sciatica, insomnia, depression and digestive problems. Alexander Technique can be very beneficial for anyone who spends long hours at the computer, and help singers, musicians, dancers and athletes to perform at their full potential.
Alexander Technique has been described not so much as something you learn, as something you un-learn. During your sessions, you will become aware of balance, posture and co-ordination while performing everyday activities. You will learn how to release unnecessary muscle tension, as well as new ways of moving which cause far less strain on the bones, joints and muscles, so that sitting, standing and walking make your body work more efficiently.
Many people who practice the Alexander Technique experience a general feeling of lightness throughout their bodies and even describe the sensation as ‘like walking on air’. And since our physical state so directly affects our mind and emotional wellbeing, you are likely to feel calmer and happier even after a few Alexander sessions, with a renewed ability to cope with life.
