BUTEYKO

Buteyko is a highly effective breathing technique which enables individuals to help
themselves to breathe normally again. Based on sound scientific concepts, published
physiological and biological research, it can be hugely beneficial for a wide range of
conditions:

•
Asthma
•
IBS
•
Sleep Apnoea
•
Snoring
•
Hayfever
•
COPD
•
ME
•
Allergies
•
Hypertension
•
Stress
•
Panic Attacks
•
Emphysema
•
Exzema
•
Fatigue
•
Anxiety
•
Bronchitis

The Buteyko Institute Method is not about throwing away your drugs, nor does it involve
physiotherapy, diaphragm breathing exercises, meditation, hypnotherapy or unproven
therapeutic systems. (However, in a clinical trial held at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane
in 1995, the group treated by the Buteyko method exhibited more than 90% reduction
in medication. NB The reduction of medication should only be after consultation with
your own GP.)

The Buteyko Method, named after Professor Konstantin Buteyko, is a system of
breathing exercises and education for the treatment of asthma and countless other
breathing and stress-related conditions in all adults and children from the age of four.
Ideally, we should breathe in around 4-6 litres of air per minute, equivalent to roughly 8-
10 breaths. People with respiratory disorders can breathe up to 3 times this amount,
resulting in excess of 20,000 breaths in a 24 hour day. Under normal circumstances,
the lungs receive the correct amount of air through the nose, where it has been filtered,
disinfected, warmed and moisturised. Large volumes of untreated air, via the mouth, cause drying of the airways, irritation and greater exposure to allergens, viruses and
bacteria. In addition, hyperventilation, over-breathing and mouth breathing upset the
body’s natural CO2 balance, which produces many adverse effects and can induce
panic attacks.

The Buteyko course consists of a free 90-minute introduction to the technique followed
by four 90-minute training sessions. Often people experience relief after the second or
third training session,, and many are able drastically to reduce or discard their
medication at the end of a week, having learned how to rely on their improved breathing
techniques. Improved sleep and reduced snoring is often reported. Morning dry mouth
disappears and sleep is more refreshing. This course can literally change your life…
As part of the course, you will have your lung function measured by our nurse Shirley
Learthart both before and at the conclusion of your Buteyko course, and be able to see
the positive impact on your own breathing of this system.

What Buteyko did for me…
‘Buteyko has lessened the frequency and severity of my panic attacks as well as
improved my asthma. I have more energy and greater concentration.’
K, Kent.
