SIVANANDA YOGA
The founder of this type of yoga developed his approach after closely observing the lifestyles and needs of people in the west. Swami Vishnu-devananda translated the ancient wisdom of yoga into five principles that could easily be incorporated into a modern lifestyle provide the foundation for healthy living. These ‘Five Points’ include:
Proper Exercise (Asanas), to help lubricate joints, muscles and other parts of the body by increasing circulation and flexibility. The asanas not only produce physical benefits, but are also mental exercises in concentration and meditation, promoting optimum health.
Proper Breathing (Pranayama) connects the body to the solar plexus, where tremendous potential energy is stored. Through specific breathing techniques this energy is released for both physical and mental rejuvenation.
Proper Relaxation (Savasana) is considered a vital part of keeping the mind and body healthy. Yoga teaches three levels of relaxation: physical, mental and spiritual.
Sivananda Yoga classes at 44 Wellington Square focus in particular on the above three points, but Sivananda Yoga also promotes…
Proper Diet - eating with awareness, enjoying food which has the most positive effect on the body.
Positive Thinking and Meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana) releases stress and replenishes energy. Meditation is well-known to improve concentration and to bring peace of mind and spiritual strength, and is especially beneficial for those of us with busy, stressful lives.
