YOGA AT WELLINGTON SQUARE NATURAL HEALTH CENTRE

We are often asked:  which type of Yoga should I try?  We have many different styles on offer at Wellington Square but the best one for you is probably one that fits with your diary, as the more regularly you can come the greater the benefits you’ll experience.  So here you will find a brief run-down of 10 different classes, and the times they are held.

At the moment, most Yoga classes at 44 Wellington Square are suitable for all levels, whether you are a beginner or experienced.

Our highly-trained Yoga teachers will ensure that you receive close attention during the class in order to help with your postures, ensuring that those who have done Yoga for a long time are suitably challenged - while newcomers are introduced to this very popular form of exercise in a gentle, encouraging and non-competitive way.

For now, all classes are drop-in (on a first-come, first served basis):  just turn up and enjoy - but be sure to buy a voucher before you to class.  (NB  For Mother & Baby Yoga you need to fill in a health questionnaire, first.)  We provide mats and blankets, although you can also buy your own high-quality yoga mat in our boutique.

Prices  Classes cost £7 per one-hour class (£6 if you buy a book of 10 vouchers), and £9 for hour-and-a-half classes (£8 if you buy a book of vouchers).

TIMETABLE

Monday 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.  Scaravelli Yoga with Romana Balle.  This style of Yoga works with gravity and breath.  A slow, intense form of yoga that makes you very aware of posture and alignment - and this class is a fantastic start to the week.

Monday 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.  Sivananda Yoga with Lisa Powell.  You’ll be taken through a smooth sequence of movements including standing, seated and relaxing postures.  A busy class;  arrive in good time to ensure a space!

Wednesday 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.  More Yoga for ‘early-birds’, with Nicky Smith.  Again, the emphasis is on breath and the use of gravity to help with postures.

Wednesday 1.05 p.m. - 1.55 p.m.  A lunch-hour Sivananda class, again with Lisa Powell (see above).

Thursday 11.30 a.m. - 12.45 p.m.  Mother & Baby Yoga (young babies) with Jane Dancey.  A class to which mothers can bring babies from 6 weeks up to sitting stage.  (Buggy-parking facilities on ground floor.)  Jane is a British Wheel of Yoga (student) teacher.

Thursday 1 p.m. - 2.15 p.m.  Mother & Baby Yoga (older babies) with Jane Dancey.  A class to which mothers can bring babies from sitting stage to crawling.  (Buggy-parking facilities on ground floor.)  Jane is a British Wheel of Yoga (student) teacher.

Thursday 6 p.m. - 7 pm.  Hatha Yoga with Chris Elam.  Think:  a darkened room, music, a whiff of incense...  This class is inspired by Chris’s regular visits to India.

Friday 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.  Scaravelli Yoga with Hilary Totah.  Our final ‘early bird’ class of the week, which once again works deeply with gravity and breath.  Many of our students refer to Scaravelli Yoga as ‘addictive…’

Saturday 9.30 a.m. - 11 a.m.  A longer Hatha Yoga class with Chris Elam which incorporates breathing techniques (pranayama) and deep relaxation as well as a swiftly-moving sequence of postures.

More about Yoga…

Yoga asanas (postures) and relaxation techniques were developed to bring both physical and spiritual benefits.  The word yoga is Sanskrit for ‘union’.  Yoga originated over 5,000 years ago in India, and was introduced to the West in the 19th Century, when scholars translated ancient Hindu religious texts.

Today, there are many types of Yoga.  As well as being both relaxing and energising – and terrific exercise for muscle tone - it can be tremendously helpful to restore a sense of balance in a world in which there is too much to do in too little time.  Stress, fatigue, headaches, depression, circulatory disorders, asthma, bronchitis, digestive disorders, back pain and PMS may all be helped by regular Yoga practice.  (NB  If you suffer from any of these, do inform your teacher.)
